Grandma Gertie, whose full name is Gertrude “Gertie” Shortman, is Arnold Shortman's eccentric but loving paternal grandmother. She runs the Sunset Arms boarding house with her husband, Grandpa Phil, and is famous for constantly adopting strange personas, costumes, and themes. Beneath her playful behavior, Gertie is remarkably capable, with a background as a librarian and police officer as well as a black belt in martial arts. She is fiercely protective of Arnold and often offers him unusual but surprisingly wise advice.
