Abuela Alma is the matriarch of the Madrigal family and the keeper of the magical candle at the heart of their Encanto. After losing her husband Pedro while fleeing danger with their newborn triplets, Alma received a miracle that created a magical refuge for her family and community. She dedicates her life to protecting that miracle and ensuring her family uses their gifts to help others, but her fear of losing everything again sometimes makes her demanding and overly protective. Through Mirabel, Alma learns that the true strength of the family comes from its love and togetherness, not simply from its magical gifts.
